WHAT TO WEAR
Dressing in layers is important with the fluctuations throughout the day. Dress in Banff is casual. In fact, there is no place in Banff that requires a jacket and tie. Layering is crucial in Banff National Park. You can always take off a layer of clothing and stash it in a bag if you’re too warm. Bring a warm jacket for the evening and a waterproof coat. Sunglasses and sunscreen are also necessary year-round because of higher UV exposure from the sun at alpine altitudes.
TIME
Clocks are set to Mountain Standard Time. Mountain Standard Time is 2 hours behind the east coast.
LANGUAGE
English is the predominant language spoken in Canada.
CURRENCY & BANKING
The Canadian currency is the Canadian dollar.
US Dollars are accepted in many locations but you will not get the most favorable exchange rate. The units of currency in Canada are the Canadian dollar (C$) and the cent, in almost the same denominations as U.S. currency ($5, $10, $20, 1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, etc.) The C$1 and C$2 bill have been replaced by C$1 and C$2 coins—known as a "Loonie," because of the loon that appears on the coin, and a "Toonie," respectively. ATMs are ubiquitous in Banff and credit cards are accepted virtually everywhere.
ELECTRICAL STANDARD
Canada uses the same voltage as the United States. No need for adapters.
TAX
Alberta has no sales tax. The Federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 5% is charged on most goods and services purchased in Canada.
